SHERMAN, Texas — Sherman received a $2,546,249 October local sales-tax allocation, up 4.3% from the comparable payment a year earlier, according to the Texas Comptroller's city-by-county allocation data. Denison's $909,580 payment was essentially unchanged year over year. Van Alstyne received $378,050, up 34.1%. Whitesboro's allocation was $193,447, up 13.8%, while Pottsboro's $92,815 payment was down 4.6%. The monthly data also show Gunter at $80,503, Howe at $65,620 and Bells at $34,332, with smaller payments to other Grayson County municipalities. These are payments to city governments from local sales-tax collections. They are not a direct measure of all retail sales in October. The allocation period and the spending that produced the collections do not necessarily fall in the same month, so the figures should be read as a monthly fiscal indicator. Year-over-year percentage changes can look large in cities with smaller payment bases. Dorchester's reported 63% increase, for example, represents a payment of $3,490. Residents comparing city budgets should use the full Comptroller series, not one month, to see whether a trend holds. The Comptroller publishes the underlying allocations by city and county. Local governments can use those receipts to fund services under their adopted budgets.
